Deaf Studies Curriculum: Foundation Stage to Key Stage Four for Deaf Children

National Deaf Studies Working Group

The Deaf Studies Curriculum pack is designed to assist children in exploring all aspects of their identity as bilingual children in today’s multi-cultural world. Many deaf children arrive at school having had limited or no access to the Deaf community. This curriculum aims to instil pride and a strong sense of identity in Deaf people in society and understanding different modes of communication used by Deaf people. To achieve these aims, this pack includes a curriculum of six units: Deaf community and culture /Deaf identity /Deaf history /Communication/Technology/Social change. The curriculum provides an overview of the teaching programme, samples of activities, samples of assessment formats—with instructions—and finally the level descriptors and attainment targets used to measure the children’s progress throughout the curriculum. Activities are suggested and professionals should select appropriate activities and materials based on the needs of their students and the resources available. Deaf children are given opportunities to develop their sense of identity and belonging, knowledge of Deaf culture, Deaf awareness and the wide range of communication modes, which will reduce isolation and help build Deaf children’s confidence. This pack consists of a Guidebook and two CD-ROMs. CD-ROM 1 contains Deaf Studies Curriculum—Primary School, and Deaf Studies Curriculum—Secondary School. CD-ROM 2 contains all the activity sheets for use with the curriculum.
